Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tourmaline?

Tourmaline is not a single mineral, but a group of minerals with a similar crystal structure. Different tourmalines contain different elements. Tourmaline is found in many different colors. Tourmaline is often confused with other types of gemstones.

What is Tourmaline made of?

Each variety of tourmaline has its own chemical formula, but tourmaline always has a six-atom ring. The elements found in tourmalines can include aluminum, boron, silicon, chromium, oxygen, hydrogen, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron and lithium. Tourmalines are among the most complicated chemical formulas of all minerals.

Since aluminum can be toxic, should I be concerned about the aluminum in Tourmaline?

Absolutely not, since the aluminum stays in the tourmaline and never enters the human body.

Is Tourmaline a crystal?

Yes, all tourmaline minerals have a crystal structure. Those crystals can be long and slender, thick prisms or column like crystals. Tourmaline is distinguished by three-sided prisms. No other common mineral has a three-sided prism.

What types of rocks contain Tourmaline?

Tourmaline is found in igneous rocks, which are from volcanic lava, in particular from granite and granite pegmatite. Tourmaline is also found in metamorphic rocks, such as schist and marble. Metamorphic rocks change from other rocks under pressure and over time.

Where is Tourmaline geographically found?

California became a large producer of tourmaline in the early 1900s. Almost every color of tourmaline can be found in Brazil. In the late 1990s, copper-containing tourmaline was found in Nigeria. Africa and Afghanistan also have tourmaline mines.

Why does it feel like the Tourmaline products are producing heat?

The tourmaline products are very energy efficient. Those particles absorb body heat and then transform that heat energy into far infrared energy. That therapeutic energy is then transmitted back into the body.

What is so special about far infrared energy?

Far infrared energy can stimulate cells and tissues to recover and heal more rapidly.  Far infrared has been used in saunas for healing for thousands of years. It is considered a promising treatment modality for healing.

Are there other energies that Tourmaline can emit?

Yes, there are two other energies that tourmaline crystals can produce:

  1. Tourmaline crystals are piezoelectric, which means that when a crystal is heated, from body heat, compressed or vibrated, the tourmaline can convert that energy into an electrical potential charge. This charge will form at opposite ends of the crystal. This produces negative ions, which are associated with a more alkaline body pH, scavenging free radicals, reducing inflammation, healing at a more rapid rate and anti-aging.
  2. Tourmaline crystals are also pyroelectric, which means that they can actually generate a weak electric current from being stimulated by heat, compression or vibration. This is like having a tens unit without batteries.

What are the health benefits of Tourmaline?

Tourmaline is a therapeutic mineral that enhances the flow of chi energy and reduces oxidative stress, to maintain health and wellness. Tourmaline also increases blood flow, blood oxygen concentration and can even help to generate new blood vessels.

Is the Tourmaline particle size important?

Yes! Tourmaline powders exhibit improved far infrared emission properties as the particle size decreases. Tourmaline works best with nanometer-sized particles, which are the smallest particles that can be manufactured today. That is why we use nanometer size tourmaline particles in our products.

Can Tourmaline actually help you to get better sleep?

Yes, the tourmaline blanket is subtle but powerful. It supports sound, deep and restful sleep and helps to generate alpha waves and serotonin. Tourmaline can radiate the energy of 8-13Hz per second, which matches exactly the alpha wave frequency in the human brain.
